At French Custom Shutters, Inc. we adhere to the latter; it is our premise to design, manufacture and install our custom hardwood shutters to the highest standard and because you deal direct with us the manufacturer we offer very competitive pricing. More about Ramona

Ramona is an unincorporated community (with plans of incorporation) in San Diego County, California, USA. The United States Census Bureau had divided Ramona into two census-designated places, the Ramona CDP and the San Diego Country Estates CDP. The population of the CDPs, which does not include the fringe areas surrounding the CDPs, was 25,223 at the 2000 census. The Ramona Community Planning Area had a population of 33,404 at the 2000 census. The 01 January 2006 population of the Ramona Community Planning Area is estimated to be 36,405 by the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG).[1]

At one time Ramona was known as the "Turkey Capital of the World." Turkey production flourished during the 1930s, and the industry was featured with popular annual Turkey Days celebrations. Turkey production went into sharp decline following World War II, and ended completely by 1959.[53]

The decline of the Turkey industry was followed by rapid growth in the chicken egg business. Egg production, which began in the 1920s, thrived into the 1970s. In 1970, there were about 50 egg ranches in Ramona. Today, most of the chicken ranches are gone. By 2003, only four remained. A notable exception to the decline is the Pine Hills Egg Ranch, which at 1,100,000 birds is the 58th largest nationally, and the 5th largest in the state of California.[54] The demise of the egg industry was, in part, due to population growth and increased land values. It was also caused by an outbreak of deadly exotic Newcastle's Disease in 1971, which took three years to stem, and another outbreak in late 2002

Testimonial

Dear Jim, Marty & Staff,

Thank you for the beautiful job you did in refinishing our shutters, and for the professionalism of your staff that removed and reinstalled them.

Your company originally installed our shutters 25 years ago, and other than needing a little fresh paint, we have enjoyed them tremendously.  My husband and I are very particular about keeping our 28 year home up to date and your shutters have added to the beauty of home for so many years.

It is seldom that you find a company that does such nice work and we would highly recommend you to anyone.

Warm Regards,
Kathy and Bill Blair

More about Poway, California
The name of the beautiful valley of Poway (Pauwai) is derived from the language of the Diegueno and Luiseno Indians who roamed the area for several hundred years before the Spaniards came.  Traces of these Native Americans still remain. Poway Road North - 1960

Documents of Mission San Diego de Alcala record the name of the valley as "Paguay" as early as 1828.  Although there is a disagreement on the meaning of "Paguay," the generally accepted translation signifies "the meeting of little valleys" or "end of the valley."

Philip Crosthwaite is believed to have been the first white settler in the Poway area.  He built an adobe house and took up ranching in 1859.

A sufficient number of settlers had come into the valley by 1869 to warrant a post office.  Castanos Paine, whose ranch was a way stop for stages from the north and from San Diego, applied to Washington for an appointment as postmaster in 1870.  The application stated that there were no post offices located between San Diego and San Bernardino at that time.  The appointment was granted, but the Postmaster General crossed out the words "Paine's Ranch" and substituted "Poway," thus settling once and for all the spelling of the name.

The 1880's saw a prosperous and well-populated valley.  Families were settling on farms, planting orchards and vineyards, and raising grain.  Dairying was profitable, as was beekeeping.  By 1887, there were about 800 people in the Poway area.

Post Office - Midland RoadBy the early 1900's, the hardiest of the settlers had managed to cope with drought and transportation problems.  They had firmly established themselves in their chosen valley and had found a good and satisfying life.  Poway became known for its exceptionally fine peaches and for its vineyards.  Grain and alfalfa were other major products.  At the close of the 19th century, fewer than 1,000 people were living in Poway.

The growth of the town did not really get underway until the late 1950’s, when Poway Valley Homes opened the first subdivision.  In 1971, a dam was constructed, creating Lake Poway, to provide residents with a more permanent source of water.

In December 1980, Poway incorporated as a full-service, general law City, which operates under the Council/Manager form of government.  Prior to that, Poway was an unincorporated area of San Diego.  The City's policy-making body, the City Council, is comprised of five members elected at large by the citizens of Poway to serve four overlapping terms.  Annually, the City Council chooses one of its members to serve as Deputy Mayor, while the public directly elects the Mayor.

Old Poway Park

In the late 1980’s, development of the 700-acre Poway Business Park began in the southern area of the City.  The Business Park is home to more than 400 businesses today and provides more than 16,000 jobs.

In October 2003, the Cedar Fire, the largest fire in the history of San Diego County, destroyed 54 homes and caused thousands to evacuate.

You can find an activity for everyone at the Lake Poway Recreation Area!  Nestled in the hills of Poway amid groves of Eucalyptus and characteristic Southern California chaparral, Lake Poway offers annual community events, fishing and boating, an extensive trail system, picnicking, softball, summer day camps, and more.   The lake serves as the water supply for Poway residents and has provided excellent outdoor recreation opportunities for the entire community since 1972.

Poway Dog Park
Poway Dog Park is an award-winning 1.75 acre fenced-in, lighted, off-leash area for dogs within the City of Poway's Community Park. Poway Community Park is open from sunrise to sunset daily. Lights in the dog park off-leash area extend evening hours to 9:30 p.m. 13094 Bowron Road, Poway. Google Map

Marty, when you arrived for our initial consultation, I appreciated you taking the time to educate me on the difference between synthetic and natural wood shutters. I also want to thank you for showing me all the variations of the color white and textures. It’s amazing how the small details make such a difference!

It’s so nice to discover a good quality company that has such a high level of customer service. All of your staff (especially Cassandra) was great to work with. I was very impressed when I asked to have the shutters installed before Thanksgiving and they were!”

More About Menifee, California

Menifee is a city located in Southwestern Riverside County, California, United States. The city is roughly 50 square miles in size. As of January 1, 2009, Menifee contains an estimated population of 67,705.[1] The City of Menifee includes the diverse lifestyle communities of Menifee, Sun City, Quail Valley, Paloma Valley and portions of Romoland.

Menifee is known for its picturesque qualities, with scenic views of the San Jacinto Mountains, the San Bernardino Mountains, Mt. Baldy, and Santa Ana Mountains above Lake Elsinore.

The area was originally inhabited by the Luiseno and Pechanga Indian tribes, and in the 1700s, the area fell under the Spanish empire. The area was eventually annexed into the United States from Mexico in 1850 under California's statehood.

Farming activity beginning in the mid-1800s was concentrated in the Menifee area, and mining activity began in the early 1880s with the discovery of a significant quartz lode by miner Luther Menifee Wilson. Menifee derived its name from that mining operation.

Early development of the City of Menifee began with Sun City in the early 1960s as the concept of an active retirement community was envisioned by Del Webb, a major building contractor from Phoenix, Arizona. Sun City is centrally located within the City of Menifee with a mix of residential and commercial activity.

The Menifee area began to grow further in 1989 with the master-planned community of Menifee Lakes and continues to be one of the fastest growing communities in California. Quail Valley is a semi-rural residential community in the northwestern section of the city, and Romoland is a residential and commercial community located in the northeastern section of the city.

On June 3, 2008, the residents of the communities encompassing the City of Menifee voted to incorporate into Riverside County's 26th city. The new City of Menifee was officially established on October 1, 2008. (from [City of Menifee Official Website] in the About Menifee section)

I especially love the water closet door you did in my master bath—it worked out even better than I imagined.  I’ll be contacting you in the near future to do my living room/dining room areas. I do not consider myself someone who is easy to please. Having a background in contracting I entered into our agreement with caution. However, you and your installers have been wonderful to work with. Both you and them arrived on time and prepared. The quality of the shutters installed in our home is simply perfect. I have learned that true value is not measured by price alone but by what you get and what you have to “go through” to obtain what you contracted for. We feel we got a bargain! We would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone who desires shutters at a fair price with quality people doing the installation. Thank you to you, Marty, and your fine staff. And that includes Cassandra who scheduled our appointments, she is a quality person.

Best regards,

David and Louise Probst

San Marcos Shutters
shutters5At French Shutters, you receive custom shutters with the highest quality available in the industry.  Whether purchasing shutters, louver, or closet doors, French Shutters will come to your home and provide a free in-house design consultation, offering advice and ideas to maximize the beauty of your window coverings.

Serving residents of San Marcos for over 30 years, French Shutters excels at bringing your home the highest quality shutters, louvers, and closet doors to give you a beautiful home to live in.

Properly installed shutters will decrease your energy bill by thousands of dollars over their lifetime. During the summer season, shutters keep the heat out and reduce air conditioning bills considerably, and likewise in the winter season, the shutters act to keep the cold air out and decrease the amount of heating you have to use.

Closing the energy saving shutters in the winter will prevent cold drafts from entering a room. Adjusting the energy saving shutters against the blazing sun during the summer will prevent that radiant heat from raising the temperature in your home, which will cause your air conditioner to work overtime and increase your energy needs. Ecologically speaking, reduction in energy usage is a good idea for the planet as well as for you.

By keeping light out, window shutters will greatly increase the comfort of your home, while adding beautiful features to your windows.  Window treatments that keep light out reduce the amount of damage to carpets, furniture, and wall adornments by minimizing the amount of sunlight that would fade them.

Many San Marcos residents have referred us to their friends and family over the years and this is our favorite types of customers.  We build relationships with our clients that last lifetimes.

The French Shutters company specializes in:

•    Painted Interior Operable Louvers
•    Painted Exterior Operable Louvers
•    Stained Interior Operable Louvers
•    Interior Closet Doors
•    Exterior Fixed Louvers
•    Shutters of all Shapes and Sizes

Serving residents of the San Marcos community for over 30 years with the finest custom shutters, louvers, and closet doors, French Shutters excels at bringing your home to life and adding that special touch of beauty.  Our shutters, louvers, and closet doors are built hand-made, we don’t buy from wholesale companies as our competitors do, and we 100% back all of our products.  It’s the French Shutters guarantee.

Plantation shutters work well in warmer climates, as they control light and heat gain in the summer, but don’t keep heat in as well.  Solid shutters are energy savers in both warm and cold weather.  The tighter they are against the window, the more energy savings you’ll have, as you create an insulating air space between the shutter and the window.

While you’re planning out your interior decorating project, consider your window treatments not only as part of your home décor, but part of your energy plan.  A small investment in the right window treatment can help you save money in the long run.

Testimonial
I believe that not only is my shutter made by French Brothers worth every penny due to the quality and durability, but the repair using their metal strip with the eyelets made my low end shutters work better than the company that made them intended them to operate.

Your loyal customer,
Marc Matys

Closing the energy saving shutters in the winter will prevent cold drafts from entering a room. Adjusting the energy saving shutters against the blazing sun during the summer will prevent that radiant heat from raising the temperature in your home, which will cause your air conditioner to work overtime and increase your energy needs. Ecologically speaking, reduction in energy usage is a good idea for the planet as well as for you.

More about Camp Pendleton, California
Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton is the major West Coast base of the United States Marine Corps and serves as its prime amphibious training base.[1] It is located in Southern California between the cities of Oceanside and San Clemente. The base was established in 1942 to train U.S. Marines for service in World War II. By October 1944, Camp Pendleton was declared as a "permanent installation" and by 1946, it became the home of the 1st Marine Division. It is named after Marine General Joseph Henry Pendleton, who long advocated setting up a West Coast training base for the Marine Corps. Today it is the home to a myriad of Fleet Marine Force units including the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force and various training commands.

In 1769, a Spaniard by the name of Capt. Gaspar de Portola led an expeditionary force northward from lower California, seeking to establish Franciscan missions throughout California. On July 20 of that same year, the expedition arrived at a location now known as Camp Pendleton, and as it was the holy day St. Margaret, they baptized the land in the name of Santa Margarita.

During the next 30 years, 21 missions were established, the most productive one being Mission San Luis Rey, just south of the present-day Camp Pendleton.[2] At that time, San Luis Rey Mission had control over the Santa Margarita area.

In 1821, following Mexico’s independence from Spain, the Californios became the new ruling class of California, and many were the first generation descendants of the Portola expedition. The Mexican governor was awarding land grants and ranchos to prominent businessmen, officials and military leaders. In 1841, two brothers by the name of Don Pio and Don Andres Pico became the first private owners of Rancho Santa Margarita. More land was later added to the grant, making the name Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores, and that name stayed with the ranch until the Marine Corps acquired it in 1942.

In 1863, an Englishman named John Forster (Pio Pico’s brother-in-law) paid off Pico’s gambling debts in return for the deed to the ranch. During his tenure as owner of the ranch, he expanded the ranch house, which was first built in 1827, and developed the rancho into a thriving cattle industry.

Forster’s heirs, however, were forced to sell the ranch in 1882 because of a string of bad luck, which included a series of droughts and a fence law that forced Forster to construct fencing around the extensive rancho lands. It was purchased by wealthy cattleman James Flood and managed by Irishman Richard O’Neill who was eventually rewarded for his faithful service with half ownership. Under the guidance of O’Neill’s son, Jerome, the ranch began to net a profit of nearly half a million dollars annually, and the house was modernized and furnished to its present form.

World War II

In the early ‘40s, both the Army and the Marine Corps were looking for land for a large training base. The Army lost interest in the project, but in February 1942 it was announced that the 122,798 acres (497 km2) of Rancho Santa Margarita y Los Flores was about to be transformed into the largest Marine Corps base in the country.[3] It was named for Major General Joseph Henry Pendleton who had long advocated the establishment of a West Coast training base. Construction began in April but the base was considered a temporary facility so it was built to minimum standards of wood frame construction.[4] After five months of furious building activity, the 9th Marine Regiment, under then Colonel Lemuel C. Shepherd, Jr., marched from Camp Elliott in San Diego to Camp Pendleton to be the first troops to occupy the new base. On September 25, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt officially dedicated the base.[5]

Korean War through the 1990s

During the Korean War, $20 million helped expand and upgrade existing facilities, including the construction of Camp Horno. When Camp Pendleton trained the country's fighting force for the Korean and Vietnam Wars, approximately 200,000 Marines passed through the base on their way to the Far East.

Camp Pendleton has continued to grow through renovations, replacing its original tent camps with more than 2,600 buildings and 500 miles of roads.

Efforts today continue to preserve the heritage of Camp Pendleton's founders and the Marine Corps' history. The original ranch house has been declared a National Historic Site.

The main gate of Camp Pendleton. This is the main road for traffic into the base. This gate has been open and manned by Marines 24 hours a day since 1942.

The base's diverse geography, spanning over 125,000 acres (506 km2), plays host to year round training for Marines in addition to all other branches of the U.S. military. Amphibious and sea-to-shore training takes place at several key points along the base's 17 miles (27 km) of coastline. The main base is in the Mainside Complex, at the southeastern end of the base, and the remote northern interior is an impact area. Daytime population is around 100,000. Recruits from nearby Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego spend a month on Pendleton's Edson Range receiving field training, and after graduating from boot camp return to the base's School of Infantry for further training. Camp Pendleton remains the last major undeveloped portion of the Southern California coastline, save for a few small state parks. In this way, it acts as a kind of buffer between Orange County and the Greater Los Angeles Area, and San Diego County.

More about Imperial Beach
The city occupies the extreme southwest corner of the continental United States: bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the west and Mexico on the south.

Known as a biker town for its rough atmosphere and seedy beachfront area throughout the 70s, Imperial Beach has undergone a significant makeover in the last ten years and the city has done much to become more visitor-friendly, commercially viable and overall more aesthetically pleasing. However, the city is still a low-key beach community. For years the city was controlled by pro-growth elected officials, but over the years environmentalists and other activists helped elect a group of smart-growth and no-growth officials. The City of Imperial Beach is now implementing an ambitious community redevelopment plan to improve the badly developed commercial corridor along Palm Avenue and Seacoast Drive.

Imperial Beach was the location of fierce environmental battles in the 1970s and 1980s over plans to develop the Tijuana Estuary and build a breakwater to control beach erosion. Former Mayor Brian Bilbray, who later became a U.S. Congressman, lost both battles. The Tijuana Estuary is now a National Estuarine Research Reserve and State Park. The cessation of plans to build the breakwater was officially the first major victory of the then fledgling Surfrider Foundation, now an international organization with 45,000-members. While the International Boundary and Water Commission wastewater plant completed in 1999 has greatly improved water quality during dry weather, the biggest obstacle to the renewal of Imperial Beach is the continued pollution of the Tijuana River and beach closures just south of the city during wet weather.

Surfing is popular in Imperial Beach with activities concentrated north and south of the Imperial Beach Pier and in front of the Tijuana Estuary at the famed Boca Rio beachbreak. The Tijuana Sloughs, a fabled big-wave surf spot is now almost unrideable due to raw toxic sewage that flows into the break from the Tijuana River. WiLDCOAST, a coastal conservation organization based in Imperial Beach, launched a grassroots "Clean Water Now" campaign to support a comprehensive plan to clean up the Tijuana River and reduce beach closures along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Thank you for helping us to sell our home. Your shutters did the trick.
An entertainer from Los Angeles bought it the second day on the market.  Thanks also for filling me in on the total cost of the shutters. We purchased them over six or seven years and I lost track.  Hope you like the way we used your name to advertise our home.  We’ll contact you about our new home and its shutter needs.

Sincerely,

Reference: Exceptional Service Plus Installation

Dear Mr. French,

When I visited my daughter in La Mesa, California and saw the excellent work you accomplished in the installation of shutters for her five-bedroom home, I was greatly impressed, so I decided to have the French Custom Shutters installed in my home, also.  I have lived in the Santee area since 1962 and suffered with allergies, but with the installation of these shutters, my allergies have disappeared and now I have “house beautiful,” which all my neighbors and friends admire.  I have double pane windows, but I must also say that my home is warmer during the evening and I know that the summers will be much cooler.I am grateful to French Custom Shutters for my beautiful transformed home. I recommend them highly.

Mr. and Mrs. Alphonse Zegler

More about Tierrasanta

Photo of The Tierrasanta community, encompassing approximately 11 square miles, lies roughly northwest of the San Diego River, north of Friars Road, south of State Route 52, and east of Interstate 15.

The residential development of Tierrasanta began in 1960, when the federal government declared a portion of Camp Elliott, a Marine Corps Training Camp, as surplus. The City of San Diego adopted the Elliott Community Plan in 1962 to guide the initial acquisition of property for public uses, such as street rights-of-way. Much of the property was then privately developed from the 1970s through the 1990s based on the updated Elliott Community Plan, adopted in 1971. The military legacy of the community still exhibits a strong presence, such as the 2,321 unit Murphy Canyon Naval housing development, which accounts for approximately one-fifth of the total dwelling units in the planning area.

In 1976, the City adopted the boundaries for Mission Trails Regional Park, bisecting the Elliott planning area into two distinct sections. The park and the newly-developing section to the west were severed from the Elliott Community Plan, and a new planning area was formed with the adoption of the Tierrasanta Community Plan in 1982. The more rugged, remote section east of Mission Trails Regional Park is now known as the East Elliott planning area and remains undeveloped.

The inclusion of extensive areas of natural open space has played a considerable role in shaping the form of development within Tierrasanta. Mission Trails Regional Park comprises approximately half of the planning area, and the San Diego River roughly forms the southerly boundary of the community. Canyon systems meander throughout the community, defining the transitions between individual development areas and interconnecting to the larger Mission Trails Regional Park canyon systems. Now, at build-out, the vast majority of developed land in Tierrasanta is devoted to residential uses, with several small commercial centers scattered throughout the community and light industrial near the intersection of Interstate 15 and State Route 52.

However, you and your installers have been wonderful to work with. Both you and them arrived on time and prepared. The quality of the shutters installed in our home is simply perfect. I have learned that true value is not measured by price alone but by what you get and what you have to “go through” to obtain what you contracted for. We feel we got a bargain! We would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone who desires shutters at a fair price with quality people doing the installation. Thank you to you, Marty, and your fine staff. And that includes Cassandra who scheduled our appointments, she is a quality person.

Best regards,

David and Louise Probst

More about Mission Beach, California
Mission Beach is a community on a stretch of sandbar along the Pacific Ocean to the west and Mission Bay to the east in San Diego. The main artery through Mission Beach is Mission Boulevard, which is divided into South Mission, a peninsula, and North Mission.

Mission Beach spans nearly two miles of ocean, with a boardwalk on both the ocean and bay side, between Mission Bay to the east and Pacific Beach to the north. The boardwalk has been expanded and separated by a yellow line for foot traffic on one side and wheels (roller blades, bicycles and skateboards) on the other. At the south end of the beach a jetty, with grass, parking and a walk, extends into the ocean.

Attractions near Mission Beach include SeaWorld and historic Belmont Park, in South Mission Beach, which features the Giant Dipper Roller Coaster. Other amusement park rides include the FlowRider, Chaos, Vertical Plunge, Krazy Kars, Tilt-a-Whirl, Liberty Carousel, Crazy Submarine, and The Trampoline. The Mission Beach Plunge opened in May of 1925 as the centerpiece of Belmont Park, which was built by John D. Spreckels to stimulate real estate sales and to promote his electric railway. The 60-foot-by-175-foot swimming pool, was at the time the largest salt-water pool in the world, holding 400,000 gallons. The plunge building, encapsulating The Plunge, which was featured in the Tom Cruise film Top Gun, was styled after the Spanish Renaissance architecture that also were erected in San Diego's Balboa Park between 1915 and 1916. It originally opened as the “Natatorium.”

The Mission Beach Plunge is the only remaining structure left from the original Belmont Park structures, which were razed in the late 1980s. Celebrities who once swam in the pool include Esther Williams and Johnny Weissmuller. The roof of the pool rolled open to make it both an inside and outdoor pool.

The Mission Beach community planning area is located on a sand bar/peninsula two miles long and up to 1/4 of a mile wide along the western edge of the mid-coastal region of the City of San Diego. It is bounded on the north by Pacific Beach, on the east by Mission Bay, on the south by the San Diego River (with Ocean Beach on the opposite bank) and on the west by the Pacific Ocean.

Because of the difficulties of developing on sand, Mission Beach developed later than its neighbors, Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach. In 1914, encouraged by land sales in these neighboring communities and a new bridge connecting Mission Beach with Ocean Beach, John D. Spreckels offered lots for sale, resulting in a tent community focused on a swimming pool, a bayfront pier and a bath house.

In 1922, the city's new health code required the removal of all non-permanent buildings. In 1925, in order to stimulate real estate sales and to promote his electric railway, Mr. Spreckels built the Mission Beach amusement center, now called Belmont Park. Upon his death, he granted Belmont Park to the City. The removal of the rail line and the bridge to Ocean Beach and the development of West Mission Bay Drive through Mission Bay Park resulted in the current circulation system.

The majority of the original residential structures in Mission Beach were constructed in the 1930s and 1940s. However, development pressure has led to the redevelopment infill of much of Mission Beach, focusing primarily on properties that are adjacent to the water and in the southern area of the community. Mission Beach is the most densely developed residential community in San Diego with a land use designation over the majority of its area of 36 dwelling units per acre. It is also comprised of the smallest lots in the city, with standard lot areas ranging from 1250 to 2400 square feet. Few of these lots have been consolidated to form larger lots.

In 1970, a Mission (Beach)-Pacific Beach Community Plan was adopted. In 1974, the City Council amended the 1970 plan to remove the Mission Beach planning area from it and adopted the Mission Beach Precise Plan.
Mission Beach is the center of a continuous stretch of beach known as The Strand, which extends over two miles, beginning at the Mission Bay channel entrance and ending at the north end of Pacific Beach. The Strand is the most popular beach area in the City of San Diego and draws large crowds in summer.

Various shops, restaurants, and beach rental outfits surround the Mission Beach lifeguard station, at the foot of Ventura Street beside a landmark roller coaster. The north end of Mission Beach is bordered by residential properties, but there are some stores available on Mission Boulevard, a block or so from the beach.

Mission Beach spans nearly 2 miles of ocean between Mission Bay to the east and Pacific Beach to the north. Filled with upscale, pastel-colored homes and condos, with a measure of old-style cottages and beach apartments, it’s a favorite among locals and tourists alike. The boardwalk at Mission Beach offers some of the best people watching in all of San Diego! Joggers, bicyclists, roller bladers, and casual strollers contrast with the local flavor, which features lots of tattoos, piercings, and exotic pets. This place is a real scene most weekends. Locals in particular enjoy this beach, which offers with both land and water activities.

More About Valley Center

Valley Center is a community in transition from a small rural town to a suburban "bedroom" community. This transition has been underway for several years. This has resulted in some agriculture, such as large fruit orchards, giving way to housing development. The growth of Valley Center has been slowed by lower densities including a minimum of 2 acres (8,100 m2) being required for most parcels. However, with San Diego County's GP2020 plan, currently being discussed, the densities in a few areas of Valley Center will be changed from a minimum of 2 acres (8,100 m2) per parcel to much higher densities. This would allow the population to expand, particularly in the town's central area. Even with current growth it is reasonable to characterize the town as "semi-rural".

Once a year, parts of the city are closed down for an event known as Western Days. This event is traditionally held over the Memorial Day weekend and consists of a community parade, a gathering at the Valley Center Community Center and a rodeo. Another event of particular interest is the Lavender Harvest Festival at Key Creek Lavender Farm. This USDA Certified Organic Lavender Farm opens its doors to the public during the height of the bloom season. Features include an on site essential oil distillery, a lavender labyrinth and a farm store/gift shop.

Points of interest

* Pikake Botanical Gardens
* Keys Creek Lavender Farm Publicly open for visitors during the harvest season, selling live plants and lavender products. Owned and operated by Alicia Wolff this Certified Organic farm features thousands of lavender plants, a lavender labyrinth, a commercial steam distillery and farm store style gift shop.
* Metta Forest Monastery
* Bates Nutt Farm Local farm hosting country events, it is regionally famous for its pumpkin patch around Halloween time.
* Valley View Casino sits on a hill overlooking the local middle school.
* Fat Ivors BBQ restaurant located at 27961 Valley Center Rd.. It was recently burned down accidentally, but has since been rebuilt.
* Lake Wohlford Local lake that allows public fishing; allows small boats.
* Hellhole Canyon Open Space Preserve

Santee Shutters

shutters13For over 30 years, French Shutters has been delivering top notch shutters, louvers, and closet doors to residents of Santee.  Simply put, custom French Shutter exterior shutters provide a level of finish that is historically accurate and architecturally correct; it is a look that sets a home apart.

When custom shutters are built and installed correctly you can see the difference. They are built by fine craftsmen with the same skill and finesse that is used in making high-quality wood furniture. By comparison, generic or “stock” shutters typically come in standard sizes, usually in four inch increments, which means that the shutter may be too long or too short for your window. Custom shutters are made so when they close, they meet perfectly in the middle, and louvered styles can be fully operational, allowing you to open and shut the louvers.

Our customized wooden shutters, louvers, closet doors, and handpicked exterior shutter hardware provide you with the highest quality and greatest flexibility for achieving the desired appearance you strive for in your home.  We have standardized the custom creation process for exterior shutter hardware and set the bar higher than any of these companies who try to replicate our product can reach.

There is no way a replica or competitor knock-off can match the significant time and expense French Shutters has made over the years to develop what we feel is simply the best shutter hardware available today. Our craftsmanship and attention to detail has delivered Santee residents the finest shutters, louvers, and closet doors to beautify your home!

Your choice of exterior shutter hardware will also depend on whether you want your shutters to be functional or purely decorative. It will also depend on what sort of security you want your shutters to provide. If your aim is functionality, tie-backs and hinges are a minimum, but for the sturdy security for which wooden shutters were originally prized, a slide bolt or other type of shutter lock is what you would want.

The value of customized exterior shutter hardware is apparent the moment the hardware is installed on your home. The high level of craftsmanship and the use of traditional materials will preserve the essence of these shutters, so that they can endure for generations. Our exterior shutter hardware selection is guaranteed to provide you with the perfect fit for your shutters and for your home.  You can expect our closet doors and louvers to have the same high quality as any of the competitors in the market.

More about Santee, California
Santee, incorporated December 1980, is entering its 27th year as a municipality. With a population of 54,700 and located in eastern San Diego County, Santee is the eleventh largest of San Diego County's 18 cities. With approximately half of its land undeveloped, Santee is one of the few cities in the county with space to grow.

Since its incorporation, Santee has worked steadily to enhance the community's quality of life. Toward that end, the City Council approved the Town Center Specific Plan, a 700-acre mixed-use development straddling the San Diego River. This project includes a high-tech office park, multi-family residential, open space, and a planned 55-acre community park for recreational activities. The San Diego Trolley has its eastern terminus in the Town Center and includes a major shopping center (Santee Trolley Square).

Two new freeways, SR-52 and SR-125, have been extended into the City. In the undeveloped northern portion of Santee, encompassing almost 25% of the City, is an area known as Fanita Ranch. This 2600-acre site is envisioned as a significant master-planned community providing high quality recreation and residential living.

Nestled between gently rolling hills and located near several refreshing lakes, Santee offers the comfortable convenience of urban living with the serenity and safety of the country. A dedicated City Council and thoughtful City government have taken steps to preserve the community's natural identity. Sound government practices and a strong financial base ensure a bright future for Santee.

More about Hillcrest, California

Hillcrest is a neighborhood in the Uptown area of San Diego near Balboa Park.

Uptown (as opposed to nearby Downtown San Diego) traditionally consists of the neighborhoods of Mission Hills, Old Town, Hillcrest, Bankers Hill, Park West and University Heights west of Park Boulevard.

Hillcrest is an affluent, older San Diego neighborhood, mostly residential, featuring tree-lined streets and traditional homes. It lies between Mission Hills and Bankers Hill on a ridge overlooking San Diego Bay to the west and Mission Valley to the east.

Hillcrest is known for its tolerance, youthfulness, "alternative" culture, diversity of age and income, locally owned businesses, restaurants, stores and cafes. The neighborhood is walkable and pedestrian friendly, owing to its grid street pattern and denser developments, compared to the more common suburban style in newer developments outside the city core.

Regular events include a weekly farmers market, Book Fair, CityFest, Mardi Gras, and the annual Pride Parade for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, considered to be the largest civic event in the city of San Diego. The route of the annual Pride Parade goes from University Avenue to Sixth Avenue, ending at the west entrance to Balboa Park.

Hillcrest remains the residential and commercial hub of San Diego's gay and lesbian community. Prominent gay bars are mostly found within Hillcrest. The LGBT community center ("The Center") is located here as well.

The Hillcrest Association representing businesses, and the Uptown Planners representing residents interested in planning issues, work to make Hillcrest attractive for shoppers and residents. The Uptown Shopping Center located at University and Vermont is considered a national model for mixed-use residential and commercial development.

Hillcrest and Mission Hills are also home to Scripps Mercy Hospital and the UCSD Medical Center.

Nearby Balboa Park provides recreational and cultural opportunities to Hillcrest residents, as does its proximity to downtown with its bayfront promenade, convention center and nightlife in Gaslamp Quarter.

Initially, Hillcrest was a chaparral-covered mesa. Kumeyaay Indians inhabited numerous villages scattered throughout the San Diego region. Spanish colonization brought the first of twenty-nine California missions with the founding of the nearby San Diego Mission. Presidio Park in Mission Hills, and Old Town just down the hill, are a treasure trove of San Diego history.

In 1870, Mary Kearney obtained a deed from the city for the land that eventually became Hillcrest. In 1871 C. D. Arnold and D. Choate, two real estate developers, obtained that property. George Hill, a wealthy railroad tycoon, then purchased the land. Real estate development began in 1910 and the area was built out by 1920. During the 1920s and 1930s Hillcrest was considered a suburban shopping area for downtown San Diego.

In 1940 the "HILLCREST" lighted sign at the intersection of University and Fifth Avenue was first erected, then later restored in 1977 and rebuilt in 1987. After World War II, Hillcrest was left with an aging infrastructure and population, but by the 1970s gays and lesbians began to settle in Hillcrest and revitalize the community.
Hillcrest is known for its tolerance, diversity, and locally-owned businesses, including restaurants, cafés, bars, clubs, trendy thrift-stores, and other independent specialty stores. Due to Hillcrest's grid street pattern and relatively high population density, pedestrian activity is relatively high.

Hillcrest is the residential and commercial hub of San Diego's gay and lesbian community. Most gay bars in San Diego are located in Hillcrest and surrounding neighborhoods. The LGBT community center ("The Center") is also based in this neighborhood.

The Hillcrest Association, a business improvement organization, and Uptown Planners, an organization representing residents interested in planning issues, work to make Hillcrest attractive for shoppers and residents.

Hillcrest is an older neighborhood going through gentrification, which is mostly residential with a large amount of retail and features tree-lined streets, traditional homes, and apartments. The neighborhood is bound by Mission Hills to the northwest, Bankers Hill and Balboa Park to the south, and University Heights and North Park to the east. A large ridge overlooking San Diego Bay borders the neighborhood to the west.

Nearby Balboa Park provides recreational and cultural opportunities to Hillcrest residents, as does the neighborhood's proximity to Downtown San Diego. Hillcrest and Mission Hills are home to Scripps Mercy Hospital and the UCSD Medical Center.

Hillcrest is part of the Uptown community, which consists of the neighborhoods of Mission Hills, Hillcrest, Bankers Hill, Park West and University Heights west of Park Boulevard.

Testimonial

Dear Marty,
I want to thank you for a wonderful job on the new shutters installed yesterday in the living room and kitchen. They look beautiful, giving the windows a neat and elegant finish and making the room look lighter. It’s great to be able to adjust each of the panels individually. I was impressed when you came to measure with the range of options you presented, and your ability to explain the pros and cons of each. The results of your recommendations are delightful! The care your installers took was also greatly appreciated. They were polite, were careful of the floors and furniture, put everything back in place, and even vacuumed the floor before they left. Thank you again for a great job!
Sincerely,
Charley Morris

More about El Cajon, California

El Cajon The El Cajon valley nestles below the San Diego foothills and its name means "big box". El Cajón is Spanish for "The Box", relating to it being a parcel of land granted out of the vast Mission San Diego de Alcala tract and used for farming by Spanish missionaries. For the last seven years the El Cajon Community Development Corporation (EDCDC) has been leading the efforts to redevelop and revitalize the downtown historic district centered around Main and Magnolia. The East County Performing Arts Center is an important facility for the community.  El Cajon is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 94,869 at the 2000 census.
Two historical names keynote the early development of the modern commercial municipality of El Cajon - The Big Box Valley and The Corners. Its growth is directly linked to its initial role as the agrarian heartland and communications center of San Diego County.

In the early part of the nineteenth century the explorations of the mission padres for pasture land led them to El Cajon Valley. The surrounding foothills were a barrier to straying cattle as well as a watershed to gather the sparse rainfall for verdant grasslands along the valley floor. For years the pasture lands supported the cattle herds of the mission and its native Indian converts.

With independence from Spain, the Spanish Dons began to cast envious eyes on the vast holdings of the Roman Catholic Missions. With secularization, California Governor Pio Pico in 1845 confiscated the lands of Mission San Diego de Alcala and granted the eleven square leagues of El Cajon.

Valley to Dona Maria Antonio Estudillo, wife of Don Miguel de Pedrorena, to repay a $500 government obligation. The grant included generally the present communities of Lakeside, Santee, Bostonia, Glenview, Johnstown, El Cajon, and part of Grossmont.

Recorded history affords scant evidence to establish a beginning date for either a permanent Spanish or American community in the valley. The Pedrorenas continued their residence in San Diego and their absentee proprietorship did not foster any economic development. Scattered homes of adobe construction were erected in the area during the mid 19th century, but the permanency of their occupancy is open to question. The establishment of a school for six children in 1870 in a homestead at Park and Magnolia offered conclusive proof that a permanent American settlement had been established.

What were the key factors which shaped El Cajon's destiny? First, there was a transfer of title from the permanent holdings of the mission to the changing hands of the Pedrorenas and their successors. This permitted the so-called highest and best use of the land in commercial terms. Then there were the natural corridors which made Main and Magnolia the crossroads from San Diego to points east and to the gold mining operations in Julian to the north. Third, there were the real estate developments following the Civil War, initiated by a San Francisco entrepreneur named Issac Lankershim. The native instincts of a New England emigrant, Amaziah L. Knox, for the economic value of the corner lot resulted in the erection of El Cajon's first commercial building at Magnolia and Main in 1876. Finally, the phenomenon called direction of growth laid a path of post World War ll's exploding urbanization along Mission Valley, through La Mesa and El Cajon.

Following the American Civil War, migrations of settlers sought homesteads on the public lands of the West. However, the poorly defined boundaries and legal confusion of Pio Pico's Rancho Cajon land grant to the Pedrorenas were to be a source of considerable dispute. As a consequence, historical accounts frequently refer to these pioneering homesteaders by the less noble term of " squatters."

Lankershim bought the bulk of the Pedrorena's Rancho Cajon holdings in 1868, employing Major Levi Chase as his attorney. Seven years of litigation ensued before title was cleared and settlements negotiated with the squatters. Lankershim subdivided his land, selling large tracts for wheat ranching. However, It was soon discovered that the soil and climate would support almost any crop. Within a few years the Big Box Valley was a flourishing produce center for citrus, avocados, grapes, and raisins. In fact, the suitability of the clear sunny climate for drying raisins was a major real estate sales "pitch."

The gold mining operations in Julian brought a steady trek of freight traffic hauling equipment and supplies and ore between San Diego and Julian. The natural line of drift led the teamsters down the old Mussey grade (now covered by San Vicente Reservoir), south to the present site of Magnolia and Main, then west through the Grossmont Pass into San Diego., Knox had moved into the Valley in 1869 to build Lankershim's house and manage his wheat ranch. Noting the teamsters' habit of camping overnight at the present site of Main and Magnolia, he erected a seven room building as a combination residence and hotel on its southwest corner in 1876. Small additions were followed by a large two story annex In 1882.

Knox's Corner was to be the nucleus of El Cajon's business district for the next seventy years. By the turn of the century the two blocks of Main Street, astride Magnolia, boasted two hotels, a general store, meat market, post office, pharmacy, harness shop, blacksmith shop, and sundry smaller shops and offices.

At the general election on November 12, 1912, 123 of 158 electors voted to incorporate a 1 1/4 square mile area centering on the historic corners of Main and Magnolia. The board of five trustees met the following week to elect one of their number as president and appoint a city attorney. Regular meetings were scheduled for the first Wednesday of each month. However, special meetings to get the administration organized and functioning were not infrequent. Committees were appointed for Streets, Alleys, Water and Lights, Finance and Licenses, and Health, Morals, and Sanitation. In addition to the elected positions of Treasurer and Clerk, appointments were made for a Marshal and Tax Collector, Engineer, Recorder, Superintendent of Streets, two Deputy Marshals, and a Fire Chief. Ordinances and resolutions were passed to fix salaries or other compensation, provide for the grading and sprinkling of streets, contract for bridge construction and mapping the City, banning cattle and hogs from the central city, and outlawing horseracing down Main Street.

For the next thirty years El Cajon followed the pattern of orderly development typical of rural/ small town America. By 1940 the population had slightly more then doubled to a figure of 1471. In the five years following World War II, the winds of change became apparent. While land area increased slightly to 1.67 square miles, in-migration increased the population to 5,600. In 1949 the City Council began to study the feasibility of the council-manager form of government to meet the day to day administrative and long range planning requirements of a growing metropolitan area.

The office of City Manager was instituted in 1950 in time to meet the most explosive decade of growth in El Cajon's history, or for that matter, the history of any comparable community in the nation. By 1960 the incorporated area was to increase five-fold to 9.8 square miles and population six-fold to 37,618.

However, this remarkable growth was not accomplished without its trauma. Fiscal resources for capital investments necessary to keep municipal services abreast of geometrically increasing demand were sorely strained. Substantial capital outlays were needed in virtually every department: Police, Fire, Sewage Treatment, Public Works, Parks and Recreation and General Government. In 1959 the Council and Manager commissioned a research study to assess the present and probable future structure of the City. Given the unforeseen developments in double digit inflation and federal revenue sharing of the 70's, the projections of this study were to prove remarkably prophetic.

Integrating these research findings and projections into its master plans, during the next decade El Cajon moved ahead on a number of significant projects. Acquisition of additional fire fighting equipment resulted in much improved insurance ratings. A dozen key street improvement projects solved the traffic congestion problems which were beginning to surface throughout the incorporated area. A cross service agreement with the San Diego Metropolitan Sewer District and construction of a major outfall line eliminated the need to rely on septic tanks which were saturating the subsoil to the danger point. The timely purchase of property on Vernon Way in the early 50's facilitated the economic construction of Public Works maintenance and storage facilities.

As the City nears the end of the twentieth century its growth is considerably more measured and orderly than that of the frantic fifties. Guided by a prudent and fiscally responsible civic leadership. It has weathered its rapid growth period with a balanced economy and a governmental structure which offers full municipal services. In 1976, during our nation's bicentennial, a new civic center was opened to serve the citizens of El Cajon, lending added luster to the historic corners of Main and Magnolia. Our most recent additions to this area are the new Headquarters Fire Station and the Neighborhood Center on Lexington and Douglas Avenues, respectively. One might pause to speculate on the thoughts of a sturdy New England emigrant when, a century earlier, he erected El Cajon's first commercial structure diagonally across the street.*

Wells Park - El Cajon
This 1.4 acre spread within El Cajon's Wells Park is the East County's second leashless dog park and is a grassy haven for pooches. And it's been getting rave reviews from East County residents who sometimes traveled far away just to let their dogs run wild. It has gravel and grassy sun areas and dual drinking fountains (for pets and their owners). Located in the southwest part of Wells Park at 1153 E. Spring Valley Shutters
shutters29For over 30 years, French Shutters has been delivering top notch shutters, louvers, and closet doors to residents of Spring Valley.

Our craftsmanship and attention to detail has delivered Spring Valley residents the finest shutters, louvers, and closet doors to beautify your home!

Sincerely,
Coleam Lewis (Herb)

More about Spring Valley, California
Spring Valley is an unincorporated community in San Diego County, California, United States. The community includes the neighborhood of La Presa and part of the neighborhood of Casa de Oro (which extends into unincorporated La Mesa). The United States Census Bureau has divided Spring Valley into two census-designated places (CDPs), Spring Valley and La Presa. The population of Spring Valley was 59,384 at the 2000 census. This figure combines the population of the Spring Valley CDP (26,633) and the La Presa CDP (32,721). There are claims that the Greater Spring Valley area has over 100,000 residents although this claims large areas that are actually unincorporated parts of La Mesa and El Cajon.

Spring Valley is named for the natural spring located there. It was long the home of the Kumeyaay tribe, who called it Neti or Meti. Spanish conquerors drove off the natives and used the area for cattle, calling it El aguaje de San Jorge (St. George's Spring).

In 1863 Judge Augustus S. Ensworth of San Diego filed a claim for a 160 acre (647,000 m²) ranch that included the spring. The ranch, and the small adobe house he built there, were sold to Rufus King Porter and later to historian Hubert Howe Bancroft. The adobe is now a National Historic Landmark.

More about Bonita, California
Bonita means "pretty" in Spanish and this community located in the southern section of San Diego County lives up to its name. Well-kept homes on large lots are scattered on its hills and there are miles of equestrian and riding trails crisscrossing the valley.

For many years the area was covered in lemon and citrus groves and gentleman farmers. Agriculture has gradually been replaced by neighborhoods for around 4,000 residents. The area's annual Bonitafest is a celebration of local crafts, foods and features a two-hour parade.

Bonita is an unincorporated community in southern San Diego County, California, nestled between the cities of Chula Vista, National City, and San Diego.

While Bonita is politically designated as an unincorporated community, bounded by the incorporated cities of Chula Vista, San Diego, and National City the community of Bonita is more closely associated with the geography of the Lower Sweetwater Valley. Thus considered, Bonita occupies about a five mile (8 km) stretch of the Sweetwater River, its valley, and surrounding hills on either side, bounded upstream (east) by the Sweetwater Reservoir, and downstream (west) effectively by Interstate 805. The community crosses west of I-805 -- an area less than 160 acres (0.6 km²) -- reaching as far south and west as East H Street and Hilltop Drive. Its northern boundary is State Route 54 and its southern extent reaches approximately one mile (2 km) south of the river.

Large portions of modern Bonita consist of housing tracts built throughout the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, including:

* Bonita Downs
* Bonita Fairways
* Bonita Glen
* Bonita Highlands
* Bonita Long Canyon
* Bonita Woods
* Emerald Ranch
* Lynwood Hills
* Ames Ranch

To visitors and residents alike, one of the most visible features of Bonita recreational life is the walking trail which loops the Chula Vista Municipal Golf Course in central Bonita. Hundreds of residents walk, run, and ride this trail every day for pleasure and fitness, and the trail has become a vital component of Bonita life for many residents.

In the late 1990s the Sweetwater Regional Park was expanded and significantly improved, extending the walking and equestrian trails to an even greater number, and introducing a camping area at Summit Meadow Road. Now, virtually the entire valley from the reservoir to I-805 formally serve recreational purposes as either park or golf course.

Equestrianism has long been a part of the Bonita community, and many trails exist throughout the Lower Sweetwater Valley. There are a number of connections to trails external to Bonita as well. In fact many residents still keep their own horses and can be seen riding the trails regularly. The Bonita Valley Trails organization monitors and supports the network of trails throughout the valley.

The following parks serve the Bonita community:

* Fred H. Rohr Park
* Sweetwater Regional Park
* Sweetwater Reservoir Riding and Hiking Trail
* Bonita Golf Course
* Chula Vista Municipal Golf Course

More about Cardiff by the Sea, California
Cardiff-by-the-Sea is a beach community tucked between Encinitas and Solana Beach in San Diego County, California. It has the Pacific Ocean on its west, Encinitas on east and north, and a beach and lagoon on the south. Operating as part of the city of Encinitas, the town of under 12,000 still considers itself a separate entity.

Like so many other towns around the region, locals prefer the small town atmosphere and most want to keep it like that. It's hard to believe it is located just 25 miles north of California's second largest city, San Diego. Conveniently located just west of Interstate 5, many residents live on hillsides with gorgeous ocean views but are still within commute distance to downtown San Diego.

Over eighty years ago, this farming community in the hills north of the San Elijo Lagoon, began to take root and grow as Cardiff when developer J. Frank Cullen broke ground to build new homes. Many streets in Cardiff bear names this English-born landowner grew up with in his native UK. Birmingham, Chesterfield and Manchester are familiar streets to Cardiff residents.

Primarily residential, there are two hotels in town, fine dining, shops and the beautiful Pacific Ocean which attracts tourists to the region. San Elijo State Beach Campground, provides opportunities for tent camping right on the ocean. Locals and travelers alike, enjoy bird watching and hiking along the trails in the San Elijo Lagoon and running and biking along the beachside highway.

One of several restaurants lined up side by side on Restaurant Row is The Beach House. The unique building complete with stained glass bathroom windows looking to the ocean was designed by famed architect, Hubble (not related to the Hubble telescope).

Cardiff offers a range of water-related activities; swimming, surfing, sunbathing, wind sailing and strolling along the shore. Also enjoy hiking, jogging, boating, tennis, fishing, hang gliding, bicycling, or nearby golfing. There is a residential and business district and a Chamber of Commerce office in Towne Centre. Drop by when they are open to purchase souvenir gifts such as T-shirts, ball caps, license plate frames and postcards.

Cardiff-by-the-Sea is a great escape. Known for its charm, village hospitality and warm, sunny weather, it offers everything unique to those who seek the beauty of a small ocean side town.
Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church Greek Festival features Greek imports, music, pottery, jewelry, game booths for kids, an open marketplace selling fresh deli specialties, and a traditional Greek coffeehouse.

More about Miramar, California
Miramar is a neighborhood in the northern part of the city of San Diego, California, USA.

Although Miramar is mainly a commercial and light industrial area, many people live in Miramar. Most residents live on the Marine base MCAS Miramar (formerly Miramar Naval Air Station). Miramar was the site of the real TOPGUN made famous by the movie Top Gun in 1986. NAS Miramar was closed by the Base Re-alignment and Closure (BRAC) program, then re-opened as a fixed wing and helicopter base for the Marines in the 1990s. To the north of MCAS Miramar is the suburb Mira Mesa.

The land on which MCAS Miramar sits has been eyed by the city of San Diego for years as a possible replacement to San Diego International Airport, but the city's location in the southwest corner of the United States makes it a very significant location for national defense purposes.

Miramar was originally part of Scripps Ranch, founded by Edward W. Scripps. He named his home he built on the ranch "Miramar" in the 1890s, after Archduke Maximilian's castle in Trieste, Italy. The name eventually became applied to the surrounding mesa. Loosely translated from Spanish it means "a view of the sea".

Before becoming a military base in 1950, Miramar was a small, isolated community centered around a railroad station. No buildings from the original Miramar survive.

Marine Corps Air Station Miramar (MCAS Miramar), formerly Naval Air Station (NAS) Miramar is a United States Marine Corps installation that is home to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, which is the aviation element of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force. It is located about 10 miles (16 km) north of downtown San Diego, California, United States.

The airfield is named Mitscher Field after Admiral M.A. Mitscher who was the commander of Task Force 58 during World War II. The air station is the former location Pacific Fleet fighter and airborne early warning aircraft (F-4 Phantom II, F-14 Tomcat, E-2 Hawkeye) and is best known as the former location of the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School (NFWS), its TOPGUN training program and the movie of the same name. In 1996, NFWS was relocated to Naval Air Station Fallon in western Nevada and merged into the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center (NSAWC). During the heyday of TOPGUN at NAS Miramar, the station was nicknamed "Fightertown USA".

More about National City

National City is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 54,260 at the 2000 census. National City is the second oldest city in San Diego County with a historic past.[3]
Places of interest
•    The National City Mile of Cars is recognized as one of the first "auto malls" in the world.
•    National City's three-mile port area along the San Diego Bay is part of Naval Base San Diego, the largest U.S. Naval base on the west coast.
•    National City Depot - The National City California Southern Railroad Depot, built in 1882, served as the first Pacific Coast terminus station of the Santa Fe Railway system’s transcontinental railroad. The station was the West Coast general office and figured prominently in Santa Fe’s effort to break the economic and transportation monopoly of California held by the Central/Southern Pacific Railroads. The first transcontinental trains arrived in November 1885, resulting in one of the largest land booms in the history of California. Of the original five transcontinental railroad terminus stations, this unique Italianate designed station is the lone survivor. Location: 900 West 23rd St, National City. Listed as California Historical Landmark no. 1023.
•    Westfield Plaza Bonita is a shopping mall in National City that attracts customers from all around the South Bay region of San Diego County. It is one of the only completely enclosed (all indoor) shopping malls in the county. It has recently been enlarged and now features a new playground, cafe terrace, Borders bookstore, Target and an AMC 14 screen cinema.
•    Paradise Valley Hospital, a 301-bed acute care facility founded by Ellen White, an Adventist, in 1902. The hospital is owned and operated by Prime Healthcare Services.
•    Cafe La Maze (est. 1941) is recognized as one of National City's most historic restaurants.[14][15]
Highland Avenue - infamous Southern California car cruising route.
Brick Row on Heritage Square, 909 A Avenue Designed by San Diego architect R. C. Ball (who designed Folsom Prison), it was constructed by Frank Kimball in 1887 for $30,000.These 10 individual row houses were to be used by the executives of the Santa Fe Railroad. This architectural style is unique to this region and was molded after the row houses of Philadelphia and similar eastern cities. It was hoped that the railroad VIPs would not only feel at home surrounded by familiar architecture, but also be impressed by the cosmopolitan appearance of the young city. All the apartments have a formal dining room with fireplace, a kitchen, a parlor with fireplace, a butler's pantry, and four bedrooms upstairs
Twelve-inch thick interlocking brick walls divide the units. The brickwork on the row houses was laid with an artistic eye to break the severe lines of the long walls. The bricks above the second story are set upright at an angle. A one-story wooden porch runs the length of the building.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it now is an integral part of National City's Heritage Square. Each of the 10 units is privately owned and maintained; however, there is a protective covenant on the facade, so the exterior will always be in keeping with the Victorian surroundings.

More about 4S Ranch
4S Ranch is an unincorporated community in San Diego County, California, United States. Pro athletes including Carlos Hernandez (now retired) and Jake Peavy are residents of 4S Ranch. To the east of 4S Ranch is the San Diego community of Rancho Bernardo. To the west is the Santa Fe Valley. Lake Hodges forms the northern border of the community while Black Mountain Ranch and Rancho Penasquitos are to the south.

4S Ranch is one of only five communities in San Diego designed and built according to strict "fire safe" construction standards. These standards resulted in not a single home being lost or even damaged in any of these communities during the October, 2007 fires which affected much of Southern California and burned over 2000 homes elsewhere throughout Southern California. [1] [2]The "Shelter in Place" construction concept of these communities was tested and passed through the fires without any damage. [3]

Although adjacent to other popular communities (Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Carmel Valley, Rancho Penasquitos, Rancho Santa Fe) in suburban San Diego, 4S Ranch is the only community among these that has been built to be sufficiently protected from wild fires such that it has been deemed a "Shelter in Place" community. [4]

The origin of the name 4S Ranch is not specifically known. The first recorded owner of Rancho San Bernardo, as the area in which 4S Ranch is currently located, was by an Englishman named Joseph Snook (who later became a Mexican citizen and changed his name to Don Jose Francisco Snook). After the collapse of the California mission system around 1840, Snook obtained a land grant to build his own rancho where 4S Ranch now stands. Many now believe the "S" in 4S Ranch stands for "Snook". The "4" may stand for "4 Snooks", after Snook and his three brothers. Contrary to myth, Snook and his wife never had any children. After his death, Snook's nieces and nephews sold the property to James McCoy for $4,020.
The property changed hands several times over the next 100 years. In 1938, the property was sold to the Ralphs family, owners of the southern California grocery chain. In the early 1980s, the Ralphs family agreed to develop the southern portion of their property (what is now the 4S Ranch master planned community by Newland Communities) and retain the northern 1,200 acres (4.9 km2) as a family retreat.

More about Escondido, California
Escondido is located at the intersection of I-15 and hwy 78, about 30 miles north of San Diego. This is a good location to stay for trips to the San Diego Wild Animal Park, and  the Mt. Palomar Observatory.

There is plenty of  lodging here, with many fine restaurants and shops. If you have time, you may want to catch a performance at the California Center for the Arts Escondido. Just north of town is the famous Lawrence Welk Resort.
Escondido was originally settled by Native American tribes. Spain controlled the land from the late 1700s to the early 1800s, and established many missions in California to convert the indigenous people. When Mexico gained its independence from Spain, the local land was divided into large "ranchos." The land that would become Escondido was Rancho Rincon del Diablo, a land grant that was given to Juan Bautista Alvarado in 1843 by the Mexican governor.

Downtown Escondido (centered on Grand Avenue) has experienced a renaissance. Numerous restaurants, cafes, and galleries have opened over the past few years. Every Friday night from April through September, the Downtown Business Association hosts the popular "Cruisin' Grand," where the public can show and view hot rods and historic cars. A different car club and/or featured attraction (i.e. antique fire trucks, nitro night, midget and sprint cars) is highlighted each week. Cruisin' Grand also features a DJ, hula hoop contests for the kids, and 7 trophies each night.
In addition to the many art galleries on Grand, a branch of the Mingei Museum has recently opened there. This museum displays handcrafts from around the world. Just one block off Grand Ave. is Grape Day Park with the civic center and the California Center for the Arts, Escondido that features two theaters, a visual arts museum, an educational complex, and a conference center. The Escondido Children's Museum and the Escondido History Center, two independent non-profit museums, are located in Grape Day Park. The Children's Museum features hands-on exhibits and programs for children up to 10 years of age, with an authentically regional perspective on natural and social science. The History Center features the city's original Santa Fe Depot, first library, Victorian house, barn, and blacksmith shop. The Pioneer Room of Escondido Public Library (located in the Mathes Center building next to the Main Library) has photographs, maps, oral histories, genealogical collections, directories and yearbooks documenting Escondido's history.[12] The San Diego North Convention & Visitors Bureau[1] is located in the California Center for the Arts, and sells half price arts performances and is the only ARTS TIX outlet in San Diego North. The Visitors Bureau also provides literature, maps, and their Travel & Planning Guide free of charge to visitors. Palomar Medical Center, located just east of downtown, is the only designated trauma center in northern San Diego County.
[edit] Wild Animal Park
A major tourist attraction just outside Escondido is the San Diego Wild Animal Park, sister park of the San Diego Zoo. The Wild Animal Park shows world animals in open habitat, where they can roam, graze, and fly.

With a history in agriculture, there are many farms and wineries around Escondido. Many of the wineries offer tours. Just to the north of Escondido in the community of Valley Center there is a lavender farm offering seasonal tours.
Valley Center and nearby Daley Ranch maintains a rural pre-colonial setting to remind tourists of a time when California was a frontier of New Spain and Mexico, especially the high number of residents of Spanish/Hispanic descent and from local Native American tribes.
Also in Valley Center is the burgeoning Native American casino industry. What once was a small collection of small casinos is now a rapidly maturing business. Even big time Vegas acts are coming to the new large hotel-casinos, and many offer golf and spa services.
Today, Valley Center is portrayed with an image of exo-suburban prosperity, when multi-million dollar homes and properties appeared in the 1990s and now residential and commercial development covers the landscape in the formerly farm-based community.
